Events and Celebrations
NATIONAL AIRBORNE DAY salutes our soldiers from the sky. The 82nd out of Fort Bragg and the 101st from Fort Campbell are our two airborne divisions. These brave men and women go the extra mile when it comes to training and execution. “Rendezvous with destiny” is a fitting motto for them and we thank you one and all for your service and sacrifice.
A priest and a rabbi walk into a bar… and then say “ouch”. TELL A JOKE DAY brings on the laughs – or the groans. Pull your best one-liners and punch lines out of your joke bag and spread the laughter – it is, after all, the best medicine.
For the thrill seekers in the audience, we give you ROLLER COASTER DAY. You can travel to Dubai and ride the fastest coaster at 149 mph or go to Six Flags in New Jersey for the tallest – at 456 feet. There is even one in Staffordshire England that has 14 loops. Spinny rides I cannot do, but roller coasters are just flat out fun.
I wouldn’t mix this next one with the last one – NATIONAL RUM DAY. Now, I could go into the history of rum or the specifics on how it is made, but that’s no fun. Raise a glass of your favorite rum drink and toast the day. It might even bring out a little pirate in ya.
On this day…
1896 – Gold is discovered in the Yukon – this triggers a gold rush and large-scale mining operations that last until 1966 – today there are still small gold mines in operation
1898- Edwin Prescott invents the first “loop de loop” roller coaster. Hence, Roller Coaster Day
1940 – The first Army parachute jump takes place. Hence, National Airborne Day
1954 – The first issue of Sports Illustrated hits the stands
1962 – The Beatles say adios to their first drummer – Pete Best – making room for you know who
