A Tip of the Hat Goes to…
EDUCATION SUPPORT PROFESSIONALS’ DAY honors the “behind the scenes” folk who help make education happen. From the janitors to the cafeteria workers to the school bus drivers to the aides and secretaries, we give all of the support staff a big thank you today and give each one a gold star of gratitude for their service.
Awareness Spotlight shines on…
WORLD COPD DAY wants us to breathe easier. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is preventable and treatable. If you are suffering from shortness of breath, and coughing that produces phlegm, see your doctor. There are medications to help with the symptoms and of course a healthy diet and exercise are never a bad thing. Here is a link to CDC’s page concerning COPD.
WORLD PANCREATIC CANCER DAY has us addressing the fourth deadliest cancer. Abdominal pain radiating to the back, loss of appetite, jaundice and dark colored urine are just some of the symptoms. For more information on this disease go to this Mayo Clinic’s page.
Education and Information
GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS DAY maps out the complex world of technology, information and geography when it comes to dealing with the question “Where”? That is what this field is all about. Since the late 1950’s, computers and technology have enhanced our abilities to make informed decisions on say, where would the best location for a wind farm be? Or where would the best bus routes go? G.I.S. has been likened to our planet’s nervous system and is involved with most human endeavors.
INTERNATIONAL CHECK YOUR WIPERS DAY has us performing some important maintenance. Especially this time of year, with slushy roads, snow and ice, you need to be able to see out your windshield clearly. For those who scrape a little peep hole on their windshield to drive by (You know who you are) clear off the whole thing please – we don’t want you getting into an accident.
Today’s Fashion Trends
NATIONAL BUTTON DAY is for those who collect, appreciate and use buttons. That’s pretty much everybody. Such a simple concept – yet so useful. There is a National Button Society to check out if you are into collecting these fashion clasping items.
For Fun
CLARINET DAY celebrates the woodwind that has been around since the 1700’s. German musician, Johann Christoph Denner, is credited with its invention and it has gone through many modifications since. You can hear its sound in all kinds of musical genres with one of the more famous as the voice of the wolf in the Peter and the Wolf composition.
On Today’s Menu…
NATIONAL FAST-FOOD DAY has us heading to our favorite burger place, taco hut or fried chicken shack. I would not recommend this every day, but now and then is just fine. White Castle was the first to sell quickly made, cheap burgers and this was done out of an old streetcar in Wichita in 1921. The price for a slider back then was 5Ȼ.
