Religious Holidays

HANUKKAH begins the 8-day Festival of Lights which commemorates the Jewish revolt against Antiochus around 190 BCE. During this time Antiochus repressed the Jewish people and their religion, going as far as desecrating their temple, slaughtering a pig on their holy altar and outright killing those who would not abandon their faith. A rebel group rose up and led the people in a revolt which ended up in the re-taking of the Temple. Legend has it, that only enough consecrated oil could be found to light the menorah for one day, but the flame lasted 8 days – giving them time to consecrate more oil and keep the light burning. Today, families gather, feasts and gifts are given, and the gambling game of dreidel is played using chocolate coins.

Education and Information

NATIONAL CRIME JUNKIE DAY celebrates the #1 true crime podcast in the world. Ashley Flowers, her dog Chuck and her best friend Brit, put out a new episode of Crime Junkie every Monday. Her shows have over a billion downloads around the world, have given support to over a hundred non-profits, brought awareness to under-reported cases and helped to advocate for those people who really needed it. Now that’s making a difference in the world.
For Fun

ANSWER THE TELEPHONE LIKE BUDDY THE ELF DAY is for those truly in a festive spirit. Will Ferrell brought Buddy the Elf to life in the movie Elf, if you don’t know who this is. So, if someone answers your call in a high-pitched voice that asks you what your favorite color is, you know what’s going on.
On Today’s Menu…

ROAST SUCKLING PIG DAY has us digging a hole in preparation for this savory dish. Prepare the pig by strapping two grills to either side and place it in the hole over lit charcoal. Turn it over occasionally and baste it from time to time. The result should be a crispy skin with tender meat. Of course, if you can find one small enough to bake in the oven – it is a lot easier.

BAKE COOKIES DAY wants us to get those ovens heated up, get the dough mixed, spooned out and put on the baking sheets. There are so many recipes to choose from, but as far as I can tell, you can’t go wrong with any of them. I tried my hand at making Surprise Kiss cookies where a Hershey’s kiss is put inside each dollop of cookie dough. They turned out pretty good. I got this recipe from a fellow blogger – InDianesKitchen – Surprise Kiss Cookies.

I would ask all of you to pray for a young man who is undergoing open heart surgery tomorrow. Gabe was recently diagnosed with a congenital heart defect, and they need to operate quickly. If you could keep him and his family in your prayers it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
