A Tip of the Hat Goes to…

My tip of the hat goes to NATIONAL WORKING MOMS DAY.  Talk about your superheroes.  Taking care of a house, kids, pets, a job and, oh yeah, yourself, is not for the fainthearted.  All moms are working moms, even if your full-time job is at home or even if being a mom means your kids have fur.  Your attention is always divided in at least 3 directions and the only time you get to take a break is usually when you fall into bed at night.  We can’t thank you enough for everything you do.

The National Committee on Pay Equity brings us NATIONAL EQUAL PAY DAY.  The day that this falls on is very significant in that today represents how much more women have to work into the year to make as much as men did last year.  Women have come a long way and now make 83 cents to the $1.00 that men do, on the average.  However, until they get paid what they deserve, this needs to keep moving forward.  If a person can do the job – pay them fairly.

Psst…psst…I got what you need right here.  You know you’ve been craving them, and you can’t get enough of them.  Don’t worry, I know somebody who can hook you up…she wears a green sash and belongs to this gang called The Girl Scouts.  That’s right, it’s NATIONAL GIRL SCOUT DAY… and they have all the cookies you can carry.  Juliet Gordon Low ran the first Girl Guides of America meeting in 1912 with 18 girls in attendance.  Today there are over 2.5 million cookie dealers…er, I mean Girl Scouts who are working to make the world a better place through courage, confidence, and character.  Happy Birthday Ladies – keep up the good work.

Grab a beer and a plate to celebrate NATIONAL BAKED SCALLOPS DAY.  These mollusks are quite tasty when prepared correctly and baking them is one of the healthier ways of doing that.  Served either as an appetizer or an entrée, dig in and enjoy.

1776 – Baltimore papers publish a notice recognizing the sacrifice of women during the Revolutionary War.  It wasn’t just their work that was being lauded, it was also their sacrifice.  Most of the goods that were boycotted by the male patriots were used by women.  It sure wasn’t the Boston Rum party – the preferred drink of men at the time – but the ladies tea is what went into the harbor.

1804 – Samuel Chase became the first and only Supreme Court Justice to be impeached

1912 – Juliette Gordon Low founds the Girl Scouts of America

1923 – Lee De Forest synchronizes music and film for the first time

1933 – President Franklin Roosevelt gives his first “fireside chat”
