NATIONAL K9 VETERANS DAY honors the four-legged soldiers, police and rescue workers who work, train, and sacrifice every bit as much as their human counterparts.   The U.S. Army K-9 Corps was founded on this day in 1942 when the military realized how valuable dogs could be.  At first, they accepted dogs from 30 breeds but shortened it down to seven -German Shepherds, Belgian sheep dogs, Doberman Pinschers, Collies, Siberian Huskies, Malamutes and Eskimo dogs. Fearless and ready for duty at any time, we salute these animals who get the job done.

In the Gospel of Luke, Christ gives us two commands: to Love God and to Love Your Neighbor.  He was then asked by a lawyer, “Who, then, is our neighbor?” Jesus then related the parable of the Good Samaritan. GOOD SAMARITAN DAY lets us know that, while we can’t help everyone, if someone comes across our path who needs help and it is within our power and means to help them, we have an opportunity to show them love.

We celebrate a lot of food and drink around here, but today is all about the individual who can tell you what’s good for you and what’s not– NATIONAL REGISTERED DIETITIAN NUTRIONISTS DAY.  They know their stuff when it comes to what we put in our bodies, as they first have to earn a bachelor’s degree in nutrition and then get licensed to practice.  You can find them in hospitals, gyms, schools, corporations and running their own business.  Thank you for watching out for us.

All that glitters is not gold – sometimes it’s NATIONAL JEWEL DAY.  Yep, diamonds, zirconium, pearls, jade, rubies, emeralds, and topaz are all appreciated today.  If it’s shiny it’s covered as we look to the sparklies and the people who deal in them.  The jewelers know the worth and help us find just what we are looking for.  Just make sure they are reputable.

Do you feel lucky today?  If you do, then go ahead and celebrate NATIONAL OPEN AN UMBRELLA INDOORS DAY. This will test the superstition on whether bad luck will follow or not.  You might as well go for broke and spill some salt, walk under a ladder, and break a mirror.  If nothing bad happens, you can go ahead and step on that crack.  If your luck takes a turn for the worse – don’t open any more umbrellas indoors.

Our dessert of the day features a creamy layered cake.  NATIONAL COCONUT TORTE DAY is full of coconut – inside and out.  Coconut flavored cake with shredded coconut for a topping is served up by the slice.  Top off dinner with this delectable dessert or go for broke and have a piece just because you want to.
