Our Furry Friends

Our Awww moment of the day belongs to NATIONAL PUPPY DAY.  Wagging tails, bundles of fur and energetic playfulness brings out the cuteness that is hard to match.  This day was started as a way to showcase how important pet rescue and adoption can be.  We can’t take them all home, but none of them should be left out in the cold.

Whew!  That was a close one.  NEAR MISS DAY breathes a sigh of relief as we recall the mountain sized asteroid, Asclepius, that came within 500,000 miles of Earth in 1989.  Scientists predict that if it would have hit our planet, the impact would have been equivalent to a 600-megaton atomic bomb going off.  We all have had close calls and are thankful that’s all they were.

NATIONAL CHIA DAY comes to us all the way from Mexico.  The Aztecs and Mayans would eat nothing but these tiny seeds as they traveled for days.  This seed is truly a superfood and one of the most wholesome grains on Earth.  Packed with vitamins, minerals, omega-3, fiber, and antioxidants, it was fairly recently, with the vegan trend, that they caught the eye of the general public.  They are easy to work into your diet and will do your body good.

NATIONAL MELBA TOAST DAY was born out of love.  Chef Auguste Escoffier was taken with Nellie Melba, an Australian opera singer, and created this thin dry wafer just for her.  It is a lighter carb, and that’s just what she needed.  Top off these crunchy little loaves with spreads, fruits, or veggies and if you have a teething toddler, they make for a great soothing biscuit.

We also have Mexico to thank for NATIONAL TAMALE DAY.  Made from a special cornmeal called masa and stuffed with meat, cheese, veggies or even fruit, these savory morsels can also be turned into sweet desserts.  Authentic tamales are cooked or steamed in banana leaves or corn husks until they are just right.  The only tamales I have had, have come out of a can.  I need to try some authentic ones.

While we are dining on our tamales, melba toast, and spreading chia seeds on them let’s go ahead and reach into our snack bowl and celebrate NATIONAL CHIPS AND DIP DAY.  No boundaries here.  Pick your favorite chip, grab your favorite dip, and take the plunge.  Lipton soup put dips on the map with their Onion Soup Dip back in the 1950’s.  We got some chips and French onion dip calling my name now.
