PALM SUNDAY falls on the Sunday before Easter and marks Jesus’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem.  He rode through the streets of Jerusalem on a donkey while the people lined the streets with their cloaks and palm tree leaves.  Today, Christ is hailed as a prophet and a king, in less than a week, all will forsake Him, call Him a criminal and crucify Him.  In today’s services, palm tree leaves will be burned, and the ashes will be kept until next year when they will be used to mark the foreheads of believers on Ash Wednesday.

Celebrate You with…

EACH PERSON IS A PERSON OF WORTH DAY cannot be stressed enough.  Everybody matters and all life has value.  We can learn something from every person we meet and don’t be down on yourself either.  You have a purpose and a place.  Remember, God made you and He don’t make mistakes.

Let’s raise a glass to NATIONAL COCKTAIL DAY.  If you are so inclined to celebrate this holiday, mix your favorite drink and enjoy.  Some of the first spirits to be mixed were Old Fashioneds and Manhattans. During Prohibition, it was easier to get cheap booze, which did not taste as good.  The fruit juices and other add ins hid the taste somewhat and cocktails, ironically, really become popular at this time.  I am thinking a couple of Manhattans sound good tonight.  If you do celebrate, please be responsible – drink, don’t drive.

Let’s head over to Philadelphia for NATIONAL CHEESESTEAK DAY.  This savory sandwich will absolutely get your mouth watering.  Thinly sliced beef, onions, and provolone cheese slathered on a hoagie roll make this a sandwich not to be missed.  As I understand it, two of the original vendors are still in business – right across the street from each other – and both claim to sell the original Philly cheesesteak.  I have also heard that both are quite delicious.  If you can’t make it to the City of Brotherly Love, head over to your nearest sandwich shop and partake.

We go back to Philadelphia, around 1927, when the Blumenthal Brothers Chocolate Company came up with our candy of the day – NATIONAL CHOCOLATE COVERED RAISIN DAY.  Combining chocolate and raisins was genius as many moviegoers will attest to – just mix ‘em with popcorn.  Raisinets are produced at a rate of over a million an hour, so we had better get to celebrating.

1944 – More than 75 Allied prisoners escape from a German POW camp in Sagan Germany.  Most were recaptured and if this sounds like it could be a movie, you are right. It was the inspiration for The Great Escape, starring Steve McQueen (birthday boy), who served in the Marines.

1958 – Elvis starts the day as the “King” and ends up a private in the Army after being drafted

1965 – 200 faculty members at the University of Michigan conduct the first “Teach-In”.  A series of anti-war seminars and rallies that would go on for 12 hours.  This would inspire similar events at other universities and colleges.

1989 – 270,000 barrels of oil, from the Exxon Valdez, are spilled into Prince William Sound

  1. Few quarterbacks have possessed the mechanics of Peyton Manning. He worked endless hours to master his craft. The photo of Steve McQueen was published to promote his role in “The Thomas Crown Affair.” And yes, he was the sophisticated image of cool.
