A Tip of the Hat Goes to…

In 1834, National Road, the first Federally funded road, was completed and it ran from Eastern Maryland to the Mississippi. NATIONAL DEFENSE TRANSPORTION DAY is actually a federal observance day that reminds us how important our transportation systems are. The Transcontinental Railroad was completed not long after National Road, and that was followed by air travel. We have so many ways to get around and it is thanks to the great many people who make this happen. Remember, that construction you are complaining about now will make for a much nicer road when it is finished.

NASCAR DAY comes roaring around the corner. Can you imagine being strapped behind an 800-horsepower engine going 200 m.p.h. around a track for hours at a time? Just thinking about it makes you want to grunt like Tim Allen. These men and women (yes, women drivers, don’t say that irrespectively to Danica Patrick) have been racing since 1948 and this has grown to become one of the largest spectator sports. But today is about more than the cars and the drivers – it’s also about the kids. NASCAR Day was started to support the NASCAR Foundation which is about keeping kids healthy and treating them when they are not. This has given rise to racing themed Speediatrics care units in some of the Florida Hospitals. Thank you for caring.
Celebrate You with…

The familiar march plays, the expectant crowd waits, and the robed students commence their walk down the aisle. Graduation is finally here and so is NATIONAL GRADUATION TASSEL DAY. A culmination of years of work, learning, studying and just living life are at hand as these young men and women step forward to receive their hard-earned diplomas and prepare to take on the next chapter of life. Cap and gown are the standard fare, and the tassel on the cap may very well end up dangling from a rearview mirror. Before that, the tassel must be moved to signify the moment. Undergraduates and high schoolers move theirs from right to left. Graduate and doctorate students keep their tassels on the left since they have already graduated. We congratulate each and every one of you on a job well done and may your future be as bright as that smile on your face.
Our Furry Friends

“Gone the way of the dodo”, is a saying that shouldn’t be in existence – like so many animals have become. NATIONAL ENDANGERED SPECIES DAY reminds us to care for our planet and all of its inhabitants. I believe people are to be cared for first, but after that, we do have a responsibility to the environment around us. We can start by not destroying, not damaging and being aware of what our presence does. This is followed with doing our part to see that all of nature has a chance to flourish and grow.
For Fun

NATIONAL BIKE TO WORK DAY is one way to decrease our carbon footprint. If it is possible to do, make sure and be safe about it. Wear your helmet, possibly some reflective clothing and watch out for traffic. We all get the meaning; however, “bike” is not specified and that could very well mean the motorized kind – “Head out on the highway…”

Hi, my name is Kevin, and I’m a pack rat. NATIONAL PACK RAT DAY serves no other purpose than to make you ask yourself, do you really need those Sky and Telescope Magazines from the 80’s? How about that tote of random stuff you’ve been lugging around for years? Sometimes, it may not be your fault (self-justification) – at first – but after those “treasures” have been sitting in the basement for years, you may have to redirect that blame and take a little action. Including myself on this one.

How about a healthy snack on NATIONAL WALNUT DAY? Before you think this day is nutty, it is a bona fide national holiday since it was proclaimed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower himself, in 1958. Full of protein and nutrients, walnuts go great in a variety of recipes and are also just fine all by themselves.

It’s Friday, which means it’s the weekend and what better way to celebrate than with NATIONAL PIZZA PARTY DAY. Gather your friends and family, order your favorite pies, and just enjoy the occasion. Just so you know, I am not too picky – just no anchovies
Our dessert of the day will make any mouth water. NATIONAL CHERRY COBBLER DAY is here to sweeten the pot. All you need for this one is yellow, or chocolate cake mix, cherry pie filling and a can of dark or white soda. Dump the pie filling in the pan, dump the cake mix on top of that and pour the soda on last (dark soda with chocolate cake mix, white soda with yellow). Bake at 350 until the toothpick comes out clean. There are fancier recipes, but the “dump cake” method works pretty well. Do not forget the vanilla ice cream.

After two years of playing the record at various speeds, talking to the songwriter, analyzing the lyrics, and putting it through whatever else they could think of – the song was declared “Unintelligible at any speed”, and therefore was not pornographic
