Mary Lou Retton brings home a perfect “10” and the gold on this day in 1984

Awareness Spotlight shines on…

Our spotlight shines on CLOVES SYNDROME AWARENESS DAY. This is a very rare disease with about 200 cases reported in the world right now. It shows up at birth and with a myriad of symptoms. Wart-like bumps, issues with the spine, limb abnormalities and a large gap between the big toe and the others could all point to this congenital disease. Since there are so few cases, there has been hardly any research done on it and we don’t know much about it. Hopefully that will change, and we can work towards getting a handle on this.
For Fun

CLEAN YOUR FLOORS DAY reminds us to do just that. You can’t really call this a celebration and if you don’t want to clean your floors…it’s ok. Now, if you think your floors need cleaning – and you have kids – this would be a great time to teach them the value and satisfaction of hard work…just sayin’.

NATIONAL SUMMIT DAY and NATIONAL DISC GOLF DAY are both designed to get you outside. It is the day to conquer your summit. That may not be a mountain peak, but it could be that hill in your neighborhood that gives a little challenge. Just like the little engine that could – you can do it. Get to the top of your Everest and enjoy the view. Playing disc golf is just fun and good exercise. All you need is a disc (do not call it a frisbee) to go hit the course. Oh yeah, unlike your country clubs, it’s free to play this golf.

Belly up to the Bar

Now, if you are thirsty after all of that, MEAD DAY will take care of you. Hoist a glass to one of the oldest fermented drinks out there. Made from honey, water and yeast, this basic brew will take on the flavor of any herb, fruits or blossoms that get added.
On Today’s Menu…

NATIONAL JAMAICAN PATTY DAY celebrates the stuffed pastry that comes to us from…yep, you guessed it…Jamaica. Seasoned beef, chicken, pork or vegetables are the usual ingredients that make up these savory pocket sandwiches. I will take just a little spice with mine please.

NATIONAL MUSTARD DAY spreads the flavor as it would go great with Jamaican Patty Day. This condiment adds a little zip to your dogs, sandwiches, pretzels or whatever else you like to put it on. If you are a lover of all things mustard – there is a Mustard Museum in Middleton Wisconsin.

NATIONAL GRAB SOME NUTS DAY does not discriminate. Peanuts, walnuts, pecans, pistachios, almonds and even macadamias are all on the menu. Go for the healthy snack with the nuts of your choosing and enjoy.

Now it’s time to reach out and grab NATIONAL WATERMELON DAY with both hands and take a big bite out of it. Sweet and juicy, there is no better summertime treat. Just watch where you spit your seeds.
