A Tip of the Hat Goes to…

WOMEN ROCK! DAY raises the horns 🤟in salute to the gals who rock on. From Janis Joplin to Grace Slick, to Ann and Nancy Wilson and Joan Jett and The Runaways, there are plenty of the fairer sex who shred the guitar, bang the drum and shout out the vocals. On this day in 1987, Aretha Franklin became the first woman to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Keep the music coming ladies.
Awareness Spotlight shines on…
WRITE TO CONGRESS DAY encourages us to learn about our government and contact those who are representing us. This involves looking up addresses and phone numbers but that is a good thing. Congress needs to hear our voices and concerns.
Education and Information
DRINKING STRAW DAY celebrates that wonderful invention that keeps our lips from touching the rim of the glass. On this day in 1888, Marvin C. Stone patented the paper drinking straw. It’s kinda funny how these little tubes started off as paper, then were made from the sturdier plastic and now are back to paper for ecological reasons. Make sure and tear the tip of the paper off – blow it at some one – and enjoy using your straw in your favorite beverage today.

EARTH AT PERHELION celebrates that day of the year when we are closest to the sun.
For Fun

FRUITCAKE TOSS DAY is just that. Go outside with that untouched fruitcake and toss it in the air as high as you can. This weirdness started in Manitou Springs Colorado in 1996 when a group of friends decided it would be a hoot to fling their fruitcakes. Since then, the event has grown with slingshots and homemade canons being used.
On Today’s Menu…

CHOCOLATE COVERED CHERRY DAY is not for everyone but those who do enjoy them – today is the day to indulge a little. These confectionary creations combine chocolate, cherries and a liquid cream center that is sometimes made from liqueur. Bet you can’t eat just one.

Happy Birthday to…

Grace Anna Goodhue (1879-1957)
Our 32nd First Lady was married to President Calvin Coolidge and would champion the Clarke School for the Deaf as well as the Red Cross while she was in office.

J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973)
This English professor gave us the wonderful tales of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings – some of my favorite books

Dorothy Arzner (1897-1979)
For sixteen years she directed movies in Hollywood. During those sixteen years, she was the only woman to do so.

Victor Borge (1909-2000)
Borge Rosenbaum was born in Copenhagen Denmark where his mother had him studying the piano at age three. He was a prodigy and went to study at the Copenhagen Music Conservatory. Somewhere along his way he realized he had a keen sense of humor and incorporated that into his musical performances where he tended to satirize the stuffiness that sometimes accompanies such events. He would also make fun of Hitler and was performing in Stockholm when Germany invaded Denmark. That year he came over to the U.S. and honed his craft. If you have never seen him, look him up on You Tube. I believe him to be one of the finest entertainers of all time.

Gordon Moore (1929-2023)
He co-founded the Intel Corporation.

Bobby Hull (1939-2023)
Hailing from Point Anne, Ontario he was nicknamed the Golden Jet due to his speed skating abilities and bullet like slapshots. One of the all-time leading scorers he made his way into the National Hockey League Hall of Fame in 1983.

Mel Gibson (1956- )
Mel Columcille Gerard Gibson was born in Peekskill New York and would find his way to the stage performing Shakespeare in 1974. From there he would go on the big screen, become a screenwriter, director and producer. Mad Max (1979) is his role that captured the world’s attention and The Passion of the Christ (2004) and Hacksaw Ridge (2016) showcase his directing abilities.

Eli Manning (1981- )
He quarterbacked the New York Giants to two Super Bowl championships earning Most Valuable Player each time.
Dear Heavenly Father, we give thanks for who You are. You are kind, loving and patient with us. May we reciprocate that with others. I thank You in the name of Jesus, Amen.
