NATIONAL WOMEN PHYSICIANS DAY is celebrated on the birthday of Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell – the first woman to receive a medical degree in the U.S.  This happened in 1849 and since then women working in the medical professions have been doing a terrific job of taking care of us.

NATIONAL MISSING PERSONS DAY highlights the fact that almost 2,300 people are reported missing every day.  From our older citizens getting turned around, to children running off and to the vile practice of abducting people for sex and labor trafficking, there are many reasons why people go missing.  Just be aware of what and who is around you – for your and others’ safety.

Bundle up for NATIONAL PLAY OUTSIDE DAY.  As long as you are dressed for it, being outside in the wintertime can be invigorating and even fun.  Make sure and dress in layers with the cotton next to the skin and the insulated clothing as the outer layers.  Complete your ensemble with hats, gloves, scarves and boots and have a good time.

Florence Rappaport needed a way to get her 6 kids through the winter and deal with the cabin fever that was creeping up.  So, she did what any good mother would do and served them ICE CREAM FOR BREAKFAST DAY.  This turned out to be a fun way to chase away the winter blues and has been celebrated since the 1960’s

Our dessert of the day may just be a veggie in disguise.  NATIONAL CARROT CAKE DAY takes a healthy carrot and adds a whole lot of sugary goodness with creamy icing.  Enjoy a slice or two but portion control may be recommended when it comes to this tasty treat.

  1. Another post overflowing with treasures. I managed to overcome my appetite for carrot cake (as you know, always watching out for sugar). My wife and I have traveled through Iowa’s twin cities (Clear Lake and Mason City) several times on our way to Montana. In Clear Lake, the Surf Ballroom still hangs around. It was the site of Buddy Holly’s final performance. The plane crash site can be found just north of the Clear Lake.

    1. I have been experimenting with Stivia as a sugar substitute and am going to try making a cake soon. It will still have calories, just not the sugar. I’ve been northeast to Michigan…gonna have to hang a left and go to Montana.
