HAPPY FIRST DAY OF SPRING

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, One nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

As the sun rises, we gather at Stonehenge to watch the first rays peek through the monoliths as people in costume welcome SPRING.  Heading eastward we celebrate Nowruz in Central Asia with special feasts of sumalak in Uzbekistan.  India’s Holi, “The Festival of Love”, is awash with light, water and bright colors as people are showered with colored powders.  In Thailand, they celebrate by having the world’s biggest water fight, and in Japan and China, they honor the dead by decorating graves, leaving them small presents while lighting beautiful lanterns and flying decorative kites.  In Mexico, Spring is welcomed at the top of ancient temples and pyramids while at the White House, children participate in the Easter Egg Roll, dating all the way back to 1878 when President Rutherford B. Hayes allowed them to do so.  However you welcome the awaking of nature and departing of Winter, enjoy this changing of the season.

The FEAST OF SAINT JOSEPH is celebrated worldwide and honors the man who willingly became the guardian and earthly father to Jesus, as told in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke.  Observances vary somewhat, but mostly call for its participants to set a table of food outside their homes for passersby while they themselves fast for the day.  In 1870, Pope Pius IX declared Saint Joseph to be the patron and protector of the church.

CERTIFIED NURSES DAY recognizes the hard work, dedication, caring and level of professionalism exhibited by these people every day.  To be a nurse in the first place is one of the hardest jobs I can think of.  Add to that the dedication of seeking to specialize, get certified and continue with the education to stay on top of that particular field.  We give a tip of the hat and a big thank you to every one of you for what you do.

The Agricultural Council of America founded NATIONAL AG DAY in 1973.  If you got to eat today, thank a farmer.  If you drove into work, thank a farmer.  If you have clothes to wear, thank a farmer.  Agriculture is intertwined in our lives, and we do thank the farmers as well as everyone else involved in this area – which is about half the population.  That guy turning out ball bearings for tractors in the metal shop – he is part of agriculture.  That young lady working the cash register at the grocery store – she is part of agriculture.  Thank you one and all for your hard work.
