A couple of folks get our deep appreciation today and first up is the guy who cleans out our pipes. NATIONAL HUG A PLUMBER DAY gives these trained professionals their due. They keep the water running, the pipes clear and are there when we need them. Thank you for that.
NATIONAL HAIRSTYLISTS APPRECIATION DAY is full of color and trim. These gals and guys keep us looking good and feeling good about ourselves. Going to school, getting licensed and keeping up with the latest trends are all part of the job. Our hat is tipped to all of you.

NATIONAL TELEPHONE DAY rings in loud and clear. Today we celebrate the invention that we can’t live without. We have been talking on the phone since 1876 and it took a little over 100 years for this device to go mobile and then a little over 10 years for it to get smart. Today there are over 9 billion mobile phones in use as well as 9 million land lines. Communication is a good thing, and we thank Alexander Graham Bell, Elisha Gray and Antonio Meucci for their innovative genius. All three put in for a patent for the telephone around the same time, AGB was just the first one to receive it.
If you have thought about planting a tree, today is the day. NATIONAL ARBOR DAY started in 1872 when J. Sterling Morton challenged the good people of Nebraska to plant as many trees as possible. They responded by planting more than a million trees that year. We need our trees. We love our trees. Plant a tree.
Here is a fairly new one that has only been around a couple of years – NATIONAL HISTORIC MARKER DAY. There are more than 150,000 markers around our country that remind us of our history. It is easy for them to deteriorate with time, and upkeep is very much appreciated. Find some in your area and brush up on your history.

Let’s go to the kitchen and celebrate NATIONAL ZUCCHINI BREAD DAY. A little flour, sugar, butter, some eggs, spices and of course, zucchini, all mixed together and baked will yield a tasty dish that just begs to have some butter slathered on it.
