REMEMBERING D-DAY

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, One nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.  John 3:16

The Allied forces strike a decisive blow with Operation Overlord against the Axis powers as they invade Normandy Beach on D-Day.  In 1944, American, British, and Canadian forces storm a 50-mile stretch of beach in Northern France. After fierce fighting they establish a foothold in the German occupied country and begin their advance towards Berlin.  By the end of August, all of France was liberated.  It is estimated that around 15,000 soldiers lost their lives that day.

Education and Information

NATIONAL HIGHER EDUCATION DAY is all about educating students on how they can realize their dreams in academics.  Costs, circumstances, and indecision can all derail the plan for continuing education, but with the proper planning, resources, and stick-to-it attitude – it can happen.

NATIONAL EYEWEAR DAY is brought to us by Zyloware Eyewear.  Eye protection and being able to see correctly can make all the difference when it comes to perspective.  If you haven’t had an eye exam in a while, go get one. If you choose to sport some specs, you should be able to find a pair that fits your personality.  In the meantime, don those aviator sunglasses and head into the danger zone.

YO-YO DAY is celebrated on the birthday of Donald F. Duncan (1892), the guy who brought this toy to the masses in the early 1900s.  The Yo-yo was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame in 1999 and deservedly so.  For generations, people have made their yo-yos go to sleep, walk the dog, go around the world and climb a ladder.  If you get a hankering to pull one out of a drawer and start spinning, go ahead. Today is the day for it.

It is time to celebrate NATIONAL DOUGHNUT DAY!  The Salvation Army came up with this one to honor the women – the Salvation Army Lassies – who would serve homemade food to the troops on the front lines during World War I.  Doughnuts were often cooked in oil using the soldiers helmets as a pot.  Be on the lookout for donut deals all across town today.

Our dessert of the day combines apples with cake.  NATIONAL APPLESAUCE CAKE DAY mixes up the recipe to bring about a moist, tasty cake.  Instead of oil or butter, add applesauce to your cake recipe.  You can even swap out an egg for the tasty stuff.  Bake it up, have some friends over and enjoy.
